Streetbase - South

The StreetBase South staff are deployed within various Hot Spot communities throughout South Lanarkshire which have been deemed to be in need of the support that the StreetBase programme brings.

Our aim is to target young people aged 10 - 18 yrs in a consistent and ongoing basis, who are either affected by either by their own consumption of alcohol and use of other substances, or to others who are indirectly affected by a significant others misuse/consumption.

Working at key times within these communities, in areas where many of the issues are being experienced, predominately between Thursdays - Sundays, our role is to target and engage with young people on the streets, in the parks and woods who are involved in the above issues.

In addition to our main focus in reducing harm, we also work through many of the linked issues that often come hand in hand with alcohol / substance misuse and have the role of providing appropriate education, prevention, intervention, support, counselling and by using alternative and diversionary activity as a tool to minimise consumption.

The StreetBase Programme links very neatly into our other youth provisions within Liber8 Lanarkshire Ltd.

The StreetBase Programme is currently active in the following areas with a minimum of three night’s coverage in each targeted area:

Kirkmuirhill / Blackwood / Lesmahagow
Stonehouse
Hillhouse / Burnbank
Eddlewood / Whitehill
Springwells
Cairns / Halfway / Burnhill

During 2010 – 2011 the following was achieved:

over 7000 direct interventions on the streets of South Lanarkshire in the past year
252 individual alternative and diversionary activities developed with young people classed as hard to reach and disengaged at key times
11 Trading Posts (6/12 week programmes, two nights per week) delivered within Hot Spot Communities
125 sessions delivered in schools to over 3309 young people
72 individual young people engaged in in-depth focussed support
1210 individual nights of coverage provided within HotSpot communities in South Lanarkshire by Youth Service staff (Not including activities held over and above)
The StreetBase programme coordinated and took part in major events due to the specific role in working within the alcohol / substance misuse field within South Lanarkshire .
